Publicity Blurb: There’s a man, on a ledge, about to jump to his end; though everyone around him has much better things to talk about.
Proposal Blurb: ‘7 Stories’ is a darkly comic absurdist play by Morris Panych, which sees a lost man confronted by the people inhabiting the building from which he plans to plunge. A series of characters comes to the windows surrounding the man, to tell him of twisted relationships, paranoia, pigeons, art and demons – though rarely ever to enquire about his own plight. The characters are exciting, exuberant, and delightfully over the top – while still allowing plenty of room to add depth and heart to each one. There are 7 male parts and 6 female parts, each with their own story and opportunity to be developed and experimented with.
White stage blocks will be placed near to the edge of the stage, each with a wonky, angular window frame hanging from the rig in front of it. The blocks will be platforms for the action, providing a challenging space for actors to work within, and making them loom over the audience as if the 7 stories truly are unfolding at height. This is awesome, as it means there will be a build, but a build surrounding simple things – giving plenty of chances for people to get involved at the get-in, no matter what they’ve been up to before. The rest of the stage will be empty, only home to the actors not currently playing out a story, masked mainly in darkness.
For lighting, we would like to make use of backlight, given the performances will all be at the front of the stage, to create striking silhouette effects. The window in which the current story is being played out will be highlighted more strongly than the others, and different colours and shades of light will be linked to different stories. The design will be vibrant and stylised to complement the absurdist nature of the play, again with a whole bunch of opportunities to come have fun with stuff at the get in
The publicity design will focus on the idea of the angular windows and silhouettes, coupled with bold and striking colours, hopefully reflecting the slightly over the top nature of the stories.
‘7 Stories’ is fun and fast paced, with a large cast and plenty to play around with, in an interesting, exhilarating and silly look at self-absorption.
