The Bedlam Theatre is a fantastic 90 seater theatre in the heart of Edinburgh which all year round houses all manner of productions, both amateur and professional, from companies all over the U.K. Our hire charges and facilities are very competitive and our location unrivaled. General Information
Please note the following:
- The Bedlam Theatre is only available for limited periods in the year.
- This prospectus and the information within it does not apply to the hire of the venue during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Please visit www.bedlamfringe.co.uk for details concerning the fringe.
- The Bedlam Theatre is not committed to any agreement until the Venue Hire Contract has been signed.
- The Bedlam Theatre reserves the right to alter the facilities and terms offered in this prospectus.
Facilities
The Bedlam Theatre is a former church dated 1846 which has been altered and adapted to include the following:
- A studio theatre with an audience capacity of 90
- Tech box and lighting rig
- Prop and set storage areas
- Dressing Room
- Box office
- Cafe
- Toilets
The theatre also has a kitchen and two administration offices for the use of the E.U.T.C. staff. Certain areas of the theatre are not accessible and the Venue Hire Manager will advise on this matter.
Cafe
The cafe is 18' by 16' and has substantial wall space for publicity and exhibitions of photos. Hot drinks, soft drinks and snacks are sold prior to performances and during the interval.
Auditorium
The theatre seats 90 in an auditorium redesigned in 1989 and refitted in 1995. The seating was replaced in 2001 and again in June 2008. There is set storage on one side of the seats together with a stage cupboard. There is a door to stage right leading to the administration offices and a fire door to stage left leading directly to the outside of the building. This door is the most convenient access for set and its measurements are 6'4" by 3'4" with a diagonal (maximum width of set) of 7'2".
Stage
The stage itself is a black studio stage, 29'5" by 17'2" with a height of 12". It has two trap doors with limited access and two stage exits; one stage left leading to the dressing room, a small props area and the backstage fire exit and one stage right leading to the dressing room and costume cupboard. The stage cupboard, to stage left, has doors opening onto the stage and auditorium which is big enough to hold bits of set and props or (as it has been used in the past) several musicians. It is possible to put speakers and microphones both around the stage area and in the stage cupboard.
Front Entrance and Box Office
The Bedlam's front doors open into a spacious foyer with a Box Office on one side and two staircases leading up to the Balcony. There is a fully computerised box office system available for use.
Backstage
Dressing Room is approximately 11' by 18' and is linked up to the intercom system.
Props Cupboard is situated to stage left and does have a small amount of space for prop storage.
Costume Cupboard is above the Dressing Room and visiting companies may borrow costumes from us if prior notice is given.
Tech
Both lighting and sound are controlled from the Tech Box which is located on the Balcony above the rear of the auditorium. There is an intercom system that links the Tech. Box with the Dressing Room, Cafe and Box Office and a stage monitor that feeds speakers in the Tech. Box and Dressing Room. There is also a Showmist smoke machine with remote control for which shows will be required to buy their own fluid.
There is a 48 channel lighting desk and 48 2.5kW dimmers on three phases (12 per 100A phase). A selection of lanterns is available. There is a Soundcraft GB4 sound desk. Full details of the equipment can also be made available on application to the Venue Hire Manager.
