General Meeting #2

Our second General Meeting of the year will be today on19 October 2022, with sign-ups beginning at 2pm for a 2:30pm start! The General Meetings are where we discuss and vote on our shows, elect people for empty positions, and do constitutional amendments. Results will be emailed to you tomorrow (Thursday)!

This meeting will be held in-person in the Bedlam auditorium. Please note that only those who have bought membership this year will be able to vote, run and propose!

You can view all proposals here.

If you cannot make it and you want to have someone else vote for you, please email the Secretary ([email protected]) with the name of the person voting for you (your proxy). Someone can only be a proxy for one other person.

If you want to run for a role and would like some more information, feel free to message Mick Zijdel (president)

Also some survival tips from Matias Krook:

  • Bedlam can get cold. I mean really cold - it’s an old church and drafty in all the wrong places. You will also be sitting down for some time. Dress up warmly and bring layers (extra jumper, a coat, beanies, scarves, a nice blanket etc) to keep you warm.
  • Hot drinks and snacks are also a good idea. Warmth and good vibes.
  • Make sure your phone/laptop is somewhat charged. You’ll be using one of those to vote.

Performance: The Shape of Things

Neil Labute’s The Shape of Things is a dark comedy which explores how in both art and life, appearances can deceive. In a small conservative town in middle America, Adam, a nerdy undergraduate English student, meets provocateur and arts major Evelyn. As their lives intertwine, lies and infidelities mount, and Adam does all he can to maintain what he thinks is the perfect relationship. LaBute leaves us with the question “does art, or truth, have any moral boundaries?”

Tickets: 5/6/8 pounds. Get them here!

Opportunity: halfBaked: Horror and Mystery

halfBaked is doing a second show! On the 29th of October prepare yourselves for an evening of horror and mystery. However, we need actors and directors!

halfBaked is a show series with the single aim of just enjoying acting. We don’t do auditions, we just take whoever signs up. Sign up and get on stage!

Opportunity: A ParaNormal Night

Our friends at Theatre Paradok are looking for actors and writers for A ParaNormal Night, next week on Thursday 27 October. They are collaborating with the Edinburgh Futures Institute to create the spookiest, scariest and the most paranormal evening of storytelling, and they need actors and writers to help bring this to life.

Whether you are wanting to read out a scary story, perform a creepy monologue or showcase some spooky original writing (or have someone else showcase it for you, perhaps), this is the event for you!

Held in the Anatomy Lecture Theatre in the Old Medical School on the night of October 27th, “A ParaNormal Night” is an opportunity to expand your talents as a storytelr. Please submit your writing or audition by the end of Friday 21 October and check out the Facebook Event for more information and a form to sign up!

Future of Bedlam Forum

There have been lots of conversation with the University and the Students’ Association over the past year to talk about the future of Bedlam Theatre, and thus, the EUTC and Bedlam Fringe. You may have heard that the University Estates Department was difficult with letting us reopen over the past year for covid reasons, and now deems it unlikely that the University will approve any renovations to Bedlam unless we give other student groups or the university more access to the building. In the near future, this is fine, but in the longer term this means the building will continue to deteroriate as the University has never spent any money on renovations and plans never came to fruition.

There is a lot more nuance, detail and history to it, so in week 7, we would like to organise a meeting to talk about the future of Bedlam, both to explain what is going on and to ask for your opinion This will be both include very long term things, towards 2030, and short-term planning (next year Fringe), so do come along whether you have been here for ages or have only just joined. It is important for us to hear as many voices as possible. No decisions will be made yet, this is just to kick off a conversation.

I will get back to you with a date as soon as possible, though likely only in the next newsletter.

Performance: The Improverts

Edinburgh’s longest running improv troupe are back for another year! After a successful run at the 2022 Fringe and a great year performing at Assembly Roxy, the Imps can’t wait to get back on stage and have some fun back in Bedlam. Join them every Friday at 22:30 for an hour of short form improv, as always based entirely on audience suggestions.

With new players and new games, shows are always different, always funny! We can’t wait for you to come and have a laugh with The Improverts and celebrate another year of critically acclaimed improv!

Tickets: 8/5/4 pounds. Buy them here.

Maintenance and DM Training

This Sunday 12:00 to 14:00 we do Maintenance where tidy up the building and do small building improvements. Everyone is welcome to help, and we will provide you with snacks and a good playlist.

After Maintenance at 14:00 to 14:30 we have Duty Management (DM) Training. We will teach you how to run the building during a show, open the building, lock up the building, and what to do in case of a fire. There always needs to be at least one DM trained person present when the building is in use, so being DM Trained is very helpful for Production Team members, or if you are just interested in seeing how it works.
